Free early reading and writing worksheets for Reception

Once children can blend, they need short, decodable things to read and write. These books use only the sounds and tricky words taught in Phases 2 to 4, with sound buttons under every word. CVC Word Tracing and Labelling Pictures start with single words. Captions: Read and Draw and Sentence Reading and Drawing are read and draw worksheets: the drawing shows whether the meaning got through.

Tracing Short Sentences teaches capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. Picture Comprehension, Sequencing Stories and Short Sentence Reading Comprehension are gentle reading comprehension worksheets for Reception, and Write the Room gets the whole class moving.

Questions about reading & writing

What is a decodable text?

A decodable text uses only letter sounds and tricky words the child has already been taught, so every word can be sounded out or recognised. It lets beginner readers succeed without guessing from pictures.

When should a child start reading comprehension?

As soon as they can blend short words. Picture comprehension and read-and-draw captions build the habit of reading for meaning before texts get long.

How does Write the Room work?

Cards are hidden around the room. Children hunt for each card with a clipboard and write the letter, word, number or shape on a recording sheet. It combines movement with purposeful writing.
