Free healthy eating and self-care printables for early years

The EYFS asks children to manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs and to understand the importance of healthy food choices. These printables make that concrete. Healthy Eating: Food Sort & Food Plate has food cards to sort, a plate based on the UK Eatwell Guide and a lunchbox to pack. Healthy Me has sleep, exercise and hygiene charts. Self-Care Routines gives step posters, sequencing pages and reward charts for washing hands, brushing teeth and getting dressed.

The pages talk about 'everyday foods' and 'sometimes treats' rather than good and bad food, and they suit healthy eating week as well as daily routines.

Questions about healthy me & self-care

How do I teach healthy eating in the EYFS?

Use real food where you can, sort pictures into everyday foods and sometimes treats, build a plate together and talk about tastes and colours. Avoid labelling foods as good or bad.

How long should children wash their hands?

About 20 seconds with soap, covering palms, backs of hands and between fingers, then rinse and dry well. Singing 'Happy Birthday' twice is a handy timer.

What self-care skills should a Reception child have?

By the end of Reception most children can wash and dry their hands, use the toilet independently, put on a coat and shoes, and are learning to brush their teeth with help.
