Free phonics worksheets for Phase 1 to Phase 4
These free printable phonics worksheets follow the Letters and Sounds phases used in UK Reception and Year 1 classes. Phase 1 is all listening: environmental sounds, rhyming worksheets, alliteration and oral blending. Phase 2 introduces the first 23 sounds with the Phase 2 sound sheets, sound buttons and blending, CVC word building and Phase 2 tricky words.
Phase 3 adds digraph worksheets for ch, sh, th, ng and nk, then vowel digraphs and trigraphs, and Phase 4 covers consonant blends and CVCC and CCVC words. Each phase has its own tricky words book and a set of phonics games. Every word carries sound buttons, so the sheets work with any validated phonics scheme.
Questions about phonics
What are the phonics phases?
Phase 1 develops listening, rhyme and oral blending. Phase 2 teaches the first 23 letter sounds and blending CVC words. Phase 3 adds the remaining letters, digraphs and trigraphs. Phase 4 practises words with adjacent consonants. Phases 2 to 4 are usually taught in Reception.
Will these phonics worksheets work with my school's scheme?
Yes. The sound order and tricky words follow Letters and Sounds, which Little Wandle, Twinkl Phonics, Bug Club and most other UK schemes are based on. Check your scheme's exact order and use the matching sheet.
What are tricky words?
Tricky words are common words with a part that cannot be sounded out with the sounds taught so far, such as the, to, no, go, I and into. Children learn them by sight alongside their phonics.
Are the phonics worksheets suitable for Year 1?
Yes. The Phase 3 and Phase 4 books and the reading comprehension pages are good revision for Year 1 children and for the phonics screening check.
