Free fine motor skills printables for 3 to 5 year olds

Fine motor skills activities strengthen the small muscles of the hand before a child is asked to write. Each printable here pairs with a cheap, everyday material. The playdough mats (70 free printable mats: letters, numbers, shapes and faces) build hand strength. The dot marker printables and sticker dot pages build aim and the pincer grip. Lacing cards, pegboard patterns and the tweezer and pom-pom sorting mats add two-handed control, patterns and counting.

Laminate the mats or slip them into plastic sleeves so they can be reused in a finger gym or on a fine motor table all year.

Questions about fine motor play

What are fine motor skills?

Fine motor skills are small, precise movements of the hands and fingers, such as pinching, gripping, threading and cutting. They underpin holding a pencil, using cutlery and fastening clothes.

Which activities improve fine motor skills for 3 to 4 year olds?

Playdough, tweezers and tongs, threading and lacing, peg boards, stickers, dot markers, tearing paper and snipping with scissors. Short daily sessions work better than long ones.

How do I use playdough mats?

Print on card and laminate or use a plastic sleeve. Children roll dough into 'snakes' and balls and lay them on the letters, numbers or pictures, then wipe the mat clean.
